Step Over The Fence
My husband put an electric fence around his garden. It’s mainly to keep out the little critters that have been eating his plants. For this reason, it is close to the ground. It’s low enough that Noah can step over it when he goes out to the garden. Yesterday an interesting thing happened. Noah and his Dad went to the garden and on the way out, Noah was expected to step over the fence wire. He put one foot over the fence and then stopped. “Dad, come get me.” he said. My husband said “Noah, you’re gonna have to step over the fence.” “I can’t “ Noah cried. His Dad responded with “you CAN”. This went on for a while. Noah was standing with one foot in the garden and one foot out. He wouldn’t move. He kept finding reasons to stay still and not take a chance stepping over the fence.
This is something we see in life. I myself would have picked Noah up and carried him over the fence. But, the bigger life lesson wouldn’t have been learned. I always tell my son “Keep trying. You can do anything if you just keep trying”. But this was an actual lesson in the moment. Something terrified him inside and my husband pushed him past that so he would move. Once he did move, they came in and ate dinner, played with Legos, etc. So, after facing his fear he got rewarded with food and Lego play.
As adults, we do the same thing. I see people everyday that are so afraid to move, that, they just sit in the same spot. No progress is made. If we don’t take chances, we will never get “lego play”. I’m not talking about risking your life. I’m talking about stepping outside your comfort zone and betting on ourself. You may be surprised at the outcome.
If you’re stuck - step over the fence
